Christina Tannous

Christina Tannous’ talent came to national attention as the 1st prize winner of the 1999 CBC Competition for Young Performers. She was also awarded the Jean A. Chalmers Award, given by the Canadian Opera Women’s Committee, and the prize for the best interpretation of the imposed Canadian work. These successes were followed by a second placing at the Jaume Aragall International Voice Competition in Spain a few monhts later.

Christina Tannous has been a soloist with various Canadian orchestras, such as the National Arts Center Orchestra, the CBC Vancouver Orchestra, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand-Montréal. Her velvet voice is appreciated in opera, oratorio and recital repertoire, and is often broadcasted by Radio-Canada and CBC Radio. Christina has performed at the Glenn Gould studio in Toronto and in the Maritime provinces for the recital series Debut Atlantic. Her oratorio performances include Haendel’s The Messiah, Vaughan-William’s Dona nobis pacem, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, Haydn’s The Creation and The Seasons and Orff’s Carmina Burana. At the opera, we have heard her sing Monica in Menotti’s The Medium conducted by Agnes Grossmann at the Orford Festival. In 2001, Christina sang the part of Anaide in Il cappello di paglia di Firenze by Nino Rota at the Vienna Kammeroper. Christina sung Les Nuits d’été by Berlioz with the Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand-Montréal conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and took part twice in their summer concert tour in the parks. Christina is the new Annabelle Canto in a series of youth concerts to be performed all around Canada, in collaboration with the Jeunesses musicales du Canada.

Born in Montreal, Christina Tannous graduated from the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal where she studied with Marie Daveluy. She then perfected her voice with Lyne Fortin. Ms Tannous is also the recipient of many grants of various organizations including the Canada Council for the Arts, the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec and the Fondation des Jeunesses musicales du Canada .
